Journey: A Portrait of Famed Czech New Wave Film Director Věra Chytilová

Jasmina Blažević was able to establish a rapport with 74-year-old director, Věra Chytilová in her film, Cesta.

This surely had to do with the fact that Štěpán Kučera, Věra Chytilová's son, was the cinematographer of this documentary. The conversations captured took place at the houme that Věra Chytilová and Jaroslav Kučera built themselves in the 1970s, when she wasn't allowed to shoot new films.

The boisterous yet elegant grande dame of the Czechoslovakian New Wave spent her time removing ice from the stones outside her house. In a summer sequence, she tells stories about each tree in the garden. She does the ironing, feeds the dog and the cat. She jumps up and hurries into the kitchen barefoot because the meat in the oven starts to burn.

Sometimes with and sometimes without her sunglasses, Chytilová tells the story of how she dealt with constant changes in relationships and the ruptures and obvious losses these entailed. And all the while, what this implied for her, obviously, also having children was an issue. In her films, she repeatedly tried to make statements about the bigger picture, about life.

The way in which Jasmina Blažević combined this footage with ample clips from her films and home movie footage of the Chytilová/ Kučera family is both aesthetically-pleasing and simply a pleasure to behold. (sasch)
