Ein Schwarz-Weiß-Film, angesiedelt in der verschneiten schwedischen Provinz. Liz, Marianne und Gunilla sind auf einer Tournee. Auf dem Programm steht Aristophanes Lysistrata, der Klassiker über die Weigerung der Frauen von Athen und Sparta, mit ihren Männern zu schlafen, um das Ende des Krieges zwischen den beiden Staaten zu erzwingen. So konfrontiert mit einer kritischen Betrachtung des Geschlechterverhältnisses, geraten die drei Schauspielerinnen in Zweifel über die eigenen bürgerlich-patriarchalen Lebensumstände. Innere Monologe, Rückblenden ins Privatleben und Fantasieszenen machen die
Unmöglichkeit deutlich, zugleich Mutter, Gattin, unabhängige Künstlerin und politische Aktivistin zu sein. Mit der Vision einer Frauenkundgebung vor dem Theater ist in diesem überbordenden, überraschenden und hochkomplexen Film die spätere Frauenbewegung zum Greifen nahe. Flickorna – inhaltlich und ästhetisch seiner Zeit voraus – hatte zum Zeitpunkt seines Erscheinens nur wenig Erfolg. Schon lange aber gilt er als „eines der ersten und engagiertesten Werke des feministischen Films“. (sasch)

A black and white film set in the snow-covered Swedish provinces. Liz, Marianne and Gunilla are on tour. They're performing Aristophanes´ Lysistrata, a classical play about the refusal of women in both Athens and Sparta to sleep with their menfolk in an attempt to coerce them to end a war raging between the two cities. This is a critical examination of gender roles in which these three actresses examine their own their own lives in middle class, patriarchal situations. Inner monologues, a flashback to private lives and fantasy scenes state the impossible but obvious: they illustrate how difficult it is to be a mother, wife, independent artist and political activist at once.
The fantasy of a women's demonstration in front of a theatre in this overwhelming, surprising and highly complex film, makes the later stages of the women's movement tangible. Flickorna – in terms of both content and aesthetic, was before its time and had, when released, limited success. Nonetheless, it has been known, for a while now, as one of the first and most dedicated of feminist films”.
