Ein Film über zwei ungleiche Frauen, die in denselben Mann verliebt sind, über die Gegensätze von Stadt und Land und über die Klassenunterschiede in der damaligen Sowjetunion. Valentina, gespielt von der Regisseurin Kira Muratova, ist eine Bürokratin, die sich in der Gemeinde zwar für die Wasserversorgung engagiert, aber einer nur vierköpfigen Familie keine größere Wohnung zur Verfügung stellen möchte. Valentina selber lebt mit ihrem Mann, dem Geologen Maksim, in einer geräumigen Wohnung, für deren Haushalt das Dorfmädchen Nadia eingestellt wird. Dass Nadia und Maksim sich bereits begegnet sind, weiß sie nicht. Die in Rückblenden und scharfen Schnitten erzählte Geschichte endet mit einer Form verschwiegener Frauen- solidarität. Nadia wird trotz ihrer Verliebtheit das Familien- glück nicht stören. Eine Orange weniger für die beiden muss als symbolische Strafe reichen. (bg)

A film about two unequal women who love the same man. It is also about the contrast between the city and the countryside and class differences in the former Soviet Union. Valentina, played by the director, Kira Muratova, is a bureaucrat responsible for water supplies. She refuses to provide a family of only four people with a larger flat. Valentina herself lives with her husband Maksim, a geologist in a spacious flat. A girl from the village, Nadja, is hired to help out as their maid. It's obvious that Valentina doesn't realise that Nadja and Maksim already know each other.
This story, told in flashbacks and radical editing, tells a story which ends with a form of non-spoken women's solidarity. Although Nadja has fallen in love with him, she is not one to disturb domestic happiness. One less orange for the couple suffices as a symbolic penalty.
